The Keepers of the Flame and Initial Recruitment
When engaging in a Breach during the endgame, Alva, one of the Keepers of the Flame, appears. This ancient order of monks is tasked with preventing the Hiveborn from invading the world. Given your proficiency in defeating demons, Alva recruits you to the order and requests that you travel to their monastery located in the south.
Updated Breach Mechanics
While traveling to the monastery, you will encounter updated Breach mechanics:
- Kill-to-Extend: The core requirement remains to slay monsters rapidly to keep the Breach open.
- Visual Feedback: You can now clearly see the remaining time for the Breach and how each individual kill extends that duration.
The Monastery and the War Effort
Upon arriving at the monastery, you learn that the war against the Hiveborn has deteriorated significantly in the 25 years since the events of the original Path of Exile. The Hiveborn have established a dangerous foothold in a massive area now corrupted by the Scourge, which the Keepers cannot currently penetrate.
Inside the monastery, you discover the Genesis Tree, a powerful relic gifted to the Keepers by the Dreamer. Although this tree is vital for creating a Breachstone capable of infiltrating the Hiveborn foothold, it has withered due to a lack of Hiveblood.
Stabilizing the Breach
To restore the Genesis Tree, you must utilize a new Breach mechanic:
- Stabilization: Keep the otherworldly portal open for an extended duration.
- Phase Transition: Once the time threshold is met, the Breach stabilizes and enters a new phase.
- Elite Encounters: The Hiveborn will send their strongest miscreations to stop you. The Breach will remain open until you defeat these enemies.
- Reward: Upon annihilation of these foes, they will drop Hiveblood, which is used to restore the Genesis Tree.
