The BIG Problem with Spirit Walker for Pure Minion Builds

Summary

  • Unsummonable Minions: Minions granted by ascendancies (like the Spirit Walker’s Bear or the Infernalist’s Hellhound) cannot be unsummoned, breaking traditional weapon-swap reset mechanics.
  • Infernal Legion Limitations: Because these “permanent” minions cannot be toggled via weapon swapping, utilizing them for Infernal Legion builds is significantly more difficult and removes the ability to “teleport” or instantly heal them.
  • Opportunity Cost of the Skill Tree: The most powerful minion nodes, such as Gigantic, are located far from the Spirit Walker’s (Ranger/Huntress) starting position, requiring heavy investment in travel points.
  • Pounce and Talisman Scaling: Pounce is currently one of the strongest skills due to its wolf summons and damage multipliers, especially when paired with talismans that transfer 60% of weapon damage to companions.
  • Defensive Shells: The most viable defensive strategy for this area of the tree involves a hybrid of Evasion and Energy Shield, potentially utilizing Ghost Dance and Grim Feast.

Core Mechanics: Spirit Walker and Companions

The Spirit Walker is a Ranger-based ascendancy (likely the Huntress) that functions as a minion-hybrid. It introduces several persistent mechanics:

  • Vivid Stampede: An attack-based movement skill that recharges and deals weapon damage.
  • Bear Spirit Companion: A persistent companion that does not count toward your standard companion limit.
  • Tame Beast: Allows the capture of unique beasts. You can have one unique tame beast summoned at a time, which gains 30% increased movement speed. These beasts are possessed by random Asmerian spirits that rotate every 20 seconds.
  • Idolatry: Provides 10% increased damage and 2% increased reservation efficiency per Idol equipped.

The Infernal Legion and Weapon Swap Problem

In current high-end minion builds, Infernal Legion is used by weapon swapping to force-respawn minions at full health and “teleport” them to the player’s location.

  1. The Restriction: Ascendancy minions (Bear Spirit and Hellhound) cannot be unsummoned. Weapon swapping does not remove them.
  2. Consequences: You cannot use Infernal Legion on the Bear Spirit reliably. If the minion takes fire damage from the gem, it will eventually die because you cannot reset its health via swapping.
  3. Alternative Movement: Without the weapon-swap teleport, players must rely on “Command” skills to manually move the minion. This is functional but significantly slower for clearing maps.

The Skill Tree and “Gigantic” Opportunity Cost

The Gigantic node is a mandatory target for pure minion builds because it provides massive multipliers to minion damage and life.

  • The Travel Issue: The Spirit Walker starts in the bottom-right (Ranger) area of the tree, while Gigantic and other premier minion nodes are in the top-left/top (Witch/Sorc) area.
  • Resource Investment: Reaching these nodes requires traveling through the Monk or Shadow areas. This creates a high opportunity cost compared to starting as an Infernalist (Witch), who begins much closer to these clusters.
  • Companion Nodes: While there are companion-specific nodes in the Ranger area, they are currently oriented toward quality of life (QoL) and defense rather than raw offensive scaling.

Scaling Strategies: Pounce, Rage, and Talismans

If Infernal Legion is nerfed, the fallback for Spirit Walker involves physical scaling:

  • Talisman Scaling: A specific node allows companions to deal additional attack damage equal to 60% of your main-hand weapon damage. Using a high-damage talisman (which can exceed 1,000 base damage) provides an massive flat damage boost to companions.
  • Pounce: This shape-shifting skill generates temporary wolves with infinite duration. While shifted, you deal 60% more damage to the target. However, shifting out of the form unsummons the wolves, and you cannot cast non-shape-shift skills (like Curses) while in form.
  • Rage Scaling: Nodes in the Ranger area grant 1% minion damage and 1% minion attack speed per point of Rage, incentivizing a hybrid playstyle where the player generates Rage to buff the army.

Defensive Layers and Recovery

Recovery is a significant hurdle for summoners in Path of Exile 2.

  • The Leech Problem: Leech is the primary recovery mechanic, but it requires the player character to deal damage. Pure summoners who do not hit enemies themselves have very poor recovery.
  • Evasion and Energy Shield: The most effective defense for a Spirit Walker is a hybrid of Evasion and Energy Shield (ES). Evasion prevents hits, allowing ES to recharge naturally.
  • Ghost Dance: Even with potential nerfs, Ghost Dance remains a premier choice for this build, as it restores ES based on total Evasion when hit.
  • Bait Mechanics: Using Skeleton Clerics solely to keep companions alive is generally considered “bait.” Clerics may be useful for Muster scaling (damage buffs), but they are not a viable primary solution for minion survivability on this ascendancy.
