POE2's 0.5 New Passive Tree - Deep Dive into all the Changes

Summary

  • Energy Shield (ES) Nerfs: The primary focus of the 0.5 tree updates is a significant reduction in Energy Shield recharge rates, faster start times, and the removal or alteration of key ES-related nodes.
  • Defensive Rebalancing: While ES was nerfed, there are new clusters and buffs aimed at alternative defensive layers, specifically armor-based and evasion-based combinations.
  • New Mechanics: Introduction of new mechanics such as “Puppet Master” stacks (minion-related) and expanded support for armor applying to elemental damage.
  • Companion Updates: New nodes have been added to support companion builds, though their overall impact remains to be tested.
  • Key Casualties: Popular nodes like Quick Response, The Cunning Fox, and Calibration have been removed or heavily altered.

Energy Shield (ES) Recharge Changes

The majority of the tree updates in 0.5 revolve around toning down Energy Shield power, specifically regarding recovery speed and the time it takes for recharge to begin.

  • Starting Area Nerfs: Many nodes in the Sorceress/Witch starting area have seen their values halved or significantly reduced.
    • Rapid Recharge: 12% increased ES recharge rate (down from 25%).
    • Essence Infusion: 12% faster start to ES recharge (down from 40%).
    • Soulbloom: Now provides 15% faster start to ES recharge (down from 20% recovery rate).
  • Cluster Adjustments:
    • Convalescence: This remains a critical cluster for ES builds. It was adjusted from 15% reduced ES recharge rate/40% faster start to 10% reduced rate/20% faster start.
    • Quick Response: Completely removed from the tree.
    • Dependable Ward: Reworked to provide 8% chaos resistance and 12% faster start to ES recharge.
  • Hybrid Archetypes:
    • Subterfuge Mask: The conversion of ES to evasion rating has been cut in half (from 2:1 to 1:1).
    • Shadow Dancing: Values adjusted down to 40% (previously 60% and 30%).

New Passive Tree Clusters & Additions

Several new clusters have been introduced, largely focusing on making armor more viable as a defensive layer against elemental damage and offering new tools for diverse archetypes.

  • Armor & Elemental Damage:
    • Colonel of the Haunted: 50% of armor applies to elemental damage, 5% faster start to ES recharge.
    • Morgana, the Stormseer: 8% of armor applies to elemental damage, 10% faster start to ES recharge, plus anti-shock benefits.
    • Vulse Protector: 50% of armor applies to elemental damage, 10% faster start to ES recharge, plus block/recovery benefits.
  • Companion Support:
    • Bond of the Viper: 16% increased skill effect duration and companions have 40% chance to poison on hit.
    • Bond of the Cats: Companions have 20% increased movement speed and reduced movement speed penalty when using skills while moving.
    • Bond of the Ape: 12% increased area of effect and companions have 30% increased area of effect.

Notable Mechanics & Wording Changes

  • Eldritch Battery: Wording updated to “convert 100% of maximum energy shield to maximum mana.”
  • Storm Charged: Significant nerf for elemental crit-based spellcasters. It no longer provides high crit/damage bonuses, shifting instead to elemental penetration and attack/cast speed.
  • Minion Buffs: Several nodes received minor buffs to minion stats (e.g., Commanding Rage now grants 2% increased minion attack speed per rage).
  • Armor/Evasion Synergy: New clusters like the one involving Night of Izaru allow for deeper investment in armor-to-elemental damage conversion and deflection rating.
