POE2 0.5 - Day 2 Permafrost Witchhunter Build Update + Tips

Summary

  • Build Status: Day 2 progress on the Permafrost Witchhunter, currently utilizing a temporary Mageblood for a power boost while transitioning gear.
  • Defense Strategy: Focusing on armor/evasion gear to maximize Sorcery Ward, supplemented by specific passive nodes that convert evasion to armor.
  • Damage Strategy: Prioritizing flat elemental damage on gloves, rings, and amulets.
  • Progression: Utilizing Essence for crafting, aiming to increase spirit breakpoints for skills like Herald of Ice, Wind Dancer, and Berserk.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: Mastering the bossing rotation involving Thunderstorm, Freezing Mark, and Shard Scavenger for burst windows.

Gear and Passive Tree Adjustments

The current setup utilizes an armor/evasion base. While evasion and armor are typically difficult to stack simultaneously, they provide the easiest access to high Sorcery Ward early in the league.

  • Helmet: Using Decree of Acuity (dropped from the new train-themed pinnacle boss), which provides significant armor and energy shield, scaling armor based on evasion.
  • Weaponry: Currently using a weapon with a low physical roll and elemental damage. A Gemini base is preferred to gain extra ammunition for Permafrost, improving clear speed.
  • Passive Tree:
    • Nodes near the start of the tree now provide armor and evasion with resistance bonuses.
    • Mark nodes were re-allocated to increase the duration of freezing marks, reducing the need for constant recasting while clearing on a budget.
    • Invested in Deep Freeze and Herald damage nodes to manage high elemental resistance maps.

Scaling Damage and Spirit Breakpoints

If damage output feels insufficient, prioritize obtaining high sources of flat elemental damage (physical/cold preferred, followed by lightning) on gloves, rings, and the amulet.

Spirit Progression:

  1. 100 Spirit: Baseline for Eternal Rage.
  2. 130 Spirit: Enables Herald of Ice (socketed in weapon set 1). Place Shard Scavenger in weapon set 2.
  3. 160 Spirit: Enables Wind Dancer, which provides a defensive buff and movement multiplier when hit.
  4. 190 Spirit: Allows for the use of Berserk.

Mapping and Targeting Tips

  • Map Selection: The build performs best in closed maps with debris, allowing for better utilization of the Permafrost ricochet effect.
  • Targeting: If experiencing issues with character targeting, try changing the “Target Ground” option under the Input menu, which can be more reliable than “Target Cursor.”
  • League Mechanics: Focus on Essence (for gear crafting) and Ritual (for Omens, which are vital for crafting).

Bossing Rotation

The bossing rotation centers on a burst window:

  1. Setup: Cast Thunderstorm and Freezing Mark to apply drench and freezing exposure.
  2. Attack: Use Permafrost while moving to activate Spray and Prey. Ricochet shots off nearby walls if possible.
  3. Proc Phase: Once the target is frozen, trigger Ice Bite or Freezing Mark bonuses. Maximize hits with Permafrost to build damage.
  4. Burst: Use Shard Scavenger to avoid ammunition consumption and land a heavy detonation with frag rounds.
  5. Cooldown: After the burst window, revert to basic attacks until Shard Scavenger is off cooldown.
