There is a persistent misconception that paywalled content implies higher quality. In Path of Exile, the opposite is generally true; the most comprehensive and high-quality resources are traditionally free. While a few creators have utilized paywalls for a long time, more are beginning to discuss it. This is problematic because users often pay for content that is inferior to the free alternatives provided by the community’s top-tier creators.

Financial Gating and Community Ethics

While it is true that no creator is strictly owed their time for free, charging for build guides often results in “sub-par” content being sold to less-informed players. Jungroan recently addressed this via social media, stating: “If you lock your build behind any type of financial gating, you’re scum.”

The industry standard in the Path of Exile community has long been open-source information. It is logically inconsistent for inferior creators to charge for builds when the best creators in the space offer their expertise for free.

Identifying Reliable Build Guides

New or inexperienced players often struggle to differentiate between a functional build and a “bait” build. To ensure a build is reliable, use the following criteria:

  1. Verify Platform Presence: Look for creators who maintain both an active Twitch stream and a YouTube channel.
  2. Accountability: Creators who stream live are held accountable by their audience in real-time. Even if a build is slightly unoptimized (e.g., 20% to 30% inefficient), it will still be functional.
  3. Avoid Fundamental Errors: Established creators will not provide guides that are fundamentally broken or include nonsensical gem links, such as:

As long as a creator is active on Twitch and YouTube, you are unlikely to have an experience that “straight up ruins” your game progression.
