PoE 2 - Crafting Guide for Beginners

Summary

  • Fundamentals of Items: Understanding how explicit and implicit modifiers function is the foundation of all crafting.
  • Item Rarity: Items progress from Normal (White) to Magic (Blue) and Rare (Yellow), with each tier allowing for more modifiers.
  • Prefixes and Suffixes: Explicit modifiers are categorized into two groups; Rare items are limited to three of each.
  • Mod Pools and Weights: Every item type has a specific set of possible modifiers, each with a “weight” determining its rarity.
  • Item Level (iLevel): The level of the item determines which “tiers” of modifiers can roll, with Tier 1 being the highest.
  • Advanced Mechanics: Using specialized currency like Essences, Omens, and Abyss Jawbones allows for deterministic results in endgame crafting.

Item Modifiers and Rarity

Item modifiers (mods or stats) are divided into two main categories:

  • Implicit Modifiers: These exist on an item regardless of its rarity and are usually tied to the base type (e.g., Increased Flammability Magnitude on a Talisman).
  • Explicit Modifiers: These are the stats added or changed through crafting.

Items also have specific rarity levels that dictate their modifier capacity:

  1. Normal (White): Zero explicit modifiers.
  2. Magic (Blue): Up to one prefix and one suffix.
  3. Rare (Yellow): Up to three prefixes and three suffixes.
  4. Unique (Orange): Follow specialized rules and cannot be crafted like normal items.

Understanding Prefixes and Suffixes

The division between prefixes and suffixes prevents items from becoming overpowered by stacking too many of the same stat type (e.g., six different damage mods). To check the category of a modifier in-game, press Alt while hovering over the item.

  • Common Prefixes: Percent increased physical damage, flat elemental damage, maximum life, maximum mana, movement speed, and defensive stats (Armor, Evasion, Energy Shield, Spirit).
  • Common Suffixes: Attack/cast speed, critical strike chance, resistances, attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence), and skill levels.

The Mod Pool and Base Types

The Mod Pool is the total list of modifiers that can potentially exist on a specific item type. A weapon cannot roll armor modifiers, and body armor cannot roll physical damage percentages.

Base Types are the white items used for crafting. Different bases have different innate stats. For example, a Siege Crossbow has a specific base damage range and an implicit modifier for additional projectiles. Finding high-level white bases with multiple sockets is a valuable strategy for high-end crafting.

Modifier Tiers and Item Level

Modifiers are ranked by Tiers, where Tier 1 is the highest/strongest. The Item Level (iLevel)—determined by the level of the area where the item dropped—restricts which tiers can appear.

  • An item level 80 body armor can roll Tier 1 Life (e.g., 200+).
  • An item level 15 body armor is restricted to much lower tiers to maintain game balance.
  • Divine Orbs randomize the values within a tier; they do not change the tier itself.

Modifier Groups and Tags

  • Modifier Groups: An item cannot have two modifiers from the same group (e.g., you cannot roll two separate “Maximum Life” explicit mods). This can sometimes be used to “block” unwanted mods during advanced crafting.
  • Tags: Most modifiers have tags like Physical, Attack, or Attribute. While currently less impactful in Path of Exile 2, these are often used by specific crafting currencies to target certain outcomes.

Basic Abyss Crafting

Abyss mechanics (found from Act 2 onwards) introduce Jawbones, which desecrate items.

  1. Use a Jawbone on a weapon, armor, or jewelry to add a hidden “Desecrated” modifier.
  2. Take the item to the Well of Souls (located at the end of the Lightless Passage in the Mastodon Badlands).
  3. Reveal the modifier to choose one of three potential outcomes.

Full Crafting Example: Grenade Crossbow

This process demonstrates how to craft a high-end physical damage crossbow by handling prefixes and suffixes separately.

  1. Acquire the Base: Obtain an Item Level 82 Siege Crossbow to ensure access to Tier 1 modifiers.
  2. Roll the First Mod: Use a Perfect Orb of Transmutation. This upgrades the item to Magic rarity and guarantees a modifier level of 70 or higher, significantly increasing the “weight” (chance) of hitting high-tier physical or elemental damage.
  3. Add a Second Mod: If you hit a desirable prefix, use a Greater Essence of Abrasion to add guaranteed flat physical damage. This upgrades the item to Rare.
  4. Desecration: Use an Omen of the Leech to guarantee an Amanamu modifier, then apply a Preserve Jawbone. Reveal it at the Well of Souls to select Grenade Damage/Duration.
  5. Fill Suffixes: Use an Omen of Greater Exaltation followed by a Perfect Exalted Orb to add two high-level suffixes.
  6. Targeted Swapping: Use a Perfect Essence of Battle. This removes a random modifier and adds +5 Level of All Attack Skills. Since the item has three prefixes and three suffixes, and the new mod is a suffix, it is forced to remove an existing suffix, keeping your damage prefixes safe.
  7. Final Polish: Repeat the process with a Perfect Essence of Haste for Onslaught until the suffixes are perfect. Apply Blacksmith’s Whetstones for quality and add Augment Sockets for extra damage.

How to Improve

  • Practice: Use the Craft of Exile emulator to practice crafting sequences without spending actual currency.
  • Research: Consult PoE2DB for modifier weights and iLevel requirements.
