Path of Exile Gold Found Ep.2 - Can you even do MAPS?!
Summary
- The Challenge: “Gold Found” is a self-imposed restriction where no items can be picked up from the ground unless they are quest items. All equipment and currency must be obtained through gold-based “window” mechanics like Ritual, gambling, and Kingsmarch mappers.
- Economic Bottlenecks: Transmutation Orbs are the most difficult currency to acquire, requiring a tedious vendor recipe involving gambling for alterations, then converting to wisdom scrolls and portal scrolls.
- Kingsmarch Strategy: Mappers are the primary engine for progression, providing maps, currency, and items that do not require ground-looting.
- Atlas Focus: Prioritizing Ritual and Expedition while blocking mechanics that drop loot exclusively on the ground (e.g., Breach, Legion, Abyss).
- End-game Goal: To defeat the Searing Exarch and the Eater of Worlds, as their entry tokens are quest items.
Introduction to Gold Found
This account is gold-locked, which fundamentally changes the approach to Path of Exile. The core rule is that no item can be picked up from the ground if it can be hidden by a loot filter. The only exceptions are quest items. Many league mechanics, such as Breach, are virtually useless because their rewards drop exclusively on the floor.
While this is a challenge character on Solo Self-Found Hardcore, any ultra-rare drops (e.g., Mirrors of Kalandra, Tier 0 uniques) will be shown on the filter. If found, these will be migrated to the main SSF HC account rather than used for the Gold Found challenge. The ultimate goal for this series is to kill the Searing Exarch and the Eater of Worlds.
The History of the Gauntlet
Running the Gauntlet event involves significant logistics and financial risk. In the early days, the event was not profitable. I personally paid for private league slots and was approximately $40,000 in debt after the fourth or fifth event because we lacked sponsors and GGG support.
The situation improved when Shopify and Mythic became involved, allowing us to pay staff and offer better prize pools. Verification is currently the biggest challenge; during the last event, there were over 1,000 boss-kill submissions that had to be manually checked for cheating or league violations. We are currently working with GGG to obtain API access to automate this verification process.
Mapping and the Transmute Struggle
Progressing into maps is difficult because gold is the only way to purchase maps from Kirac. Maps are bought as white (normal) items, and Transmutation Orbs are incredibly scarce. To get one from a vendor, I must:
- Gamble for gear to obtain items to vendor for Alteration Shards/Orbs.
- Sell Alterations for Wisdom Scrolls.
- Sell three Wisdom Scrolls for one Portal Scroll.
- Sell seven Portal Scrolls for one Transmutation Orb.
Because this process takes hours of grinding, obtaining a single Transmute from a mapper is a massive progression skip.
Kingsmarch Mappers and Ritual
The mappers in Kingsmarch are the most reliable source of items and currency. Even a low-level mapper can return with Transmutation Orbs, Alchemy Orbs, or even new maps. Ritual is equally vital because it provides a “window” interface for rewards, bypassing the “no ground loot” rule.
In one Tier 2 map, a Ritual encounter provided several Transmutation Orbs, Orb of Scouring, and a jewel. This is “account-changing” loot in this context. Everything—even a white item that can be vendored for a wisdom scrap—has immense value compared to the standard game or even Ruthless mode.
Character Progression and Merciless Lab
Current gear upgrades focus on a four-link Honorhome helmet, which provides +2 to Socketed Gems and flat added damage, making it a “Best-in-Slot” (BIS) item for this stage. The build utilizes Stormburst Totems (Transfigured version), which offers high base damage and clear speed.
I ran Merciless Lab to hunt for Transfigured gems and level 20 gem upgrades. In this mode, even the quality of a gem or a single Orb of Fusing is a major milestone.
Atlas Strategy and Mechanics Blocking
The Atlas strategy involves moving toward Ritual and Expedition nodes while using Keystones to block mechanics that are incompatible with the challenge:
- Blocked: Breach, Legion, Abyss, and Harvest (after unlocking the bench).
- Kept: Ritual, Expedition, and potentially Delirium.
- Expedition: The goal is to unlock Tujen, as his haggling window is a primary source of currency, though his reroll currency must be found through mappers.
The Proposed “Gold Found” Private League Mod
I intend to suggest a new private league modifier to GGG. In this mode:
- Every item that would drop on the ground (including Mirrors and Divines) is automatically converted into gold.
- Boss-specific uniques and fragments (e.g., Atziri’s Promise, Watcher’s Eye, Invitations) would remain as physical drops to allow for targeted boss farming.
- This would create a “true” Gold Found environment where players must rely on vendors, gambling, and town mechanics rather than manual loot filters.
