Path of Exile 2: Streamlining the Campaign
Summary
- Implementation of environmental cues to guide players through the campaign more efficiently.
- Introduction of landmarks, signposts, and visual trails (roots, insects, debris) to reduce time spent lost in large zones.
- Structural changes to Act 1, 2, and 3 layouts to create more linear paths and clearer objectives.
- Enhanced NPC utility in Act 3 to provide map markers and directions.
- Quality-of-life updates to mechanics like Rituals, extending into the endgame.
Act 1: Environmental Navigation Cues
To reduce the time spent navigating the initial acts, several visual guides have been added to the environment:
- Grelwood: Follow the river upstream to always find the path to the Red Vale.
- Tree of Souls: Look for magical glowing roots on the ground. Following these leads directly to the tree.
- Grim Tangle: The presence of specific mushrooms indicates that the entrance to the Grim Tangle is nearby.
- The Hunting Grounds: This large area now features clearer landmarks and signposts. A signpost in the middle of the path leads to the Ogham Farmlands.
- The Bloody Crowbell: A trail of “pecked-at bovine” carcasses leads directly to the territory of the butcher.
- Freythorn: Completing a Ritual now creates a trail of locusts that leads directly to the next Ritual or the next area. This mechanic has also been added to Rituals in the endgame.
Act 2: Structural Clarity and Objective Tracking
Changes in Act 2 focus on making branching paths more predictable and returning to objectives faster:
- Traitor’s Passage: This zone now features a guaranteed intersection. One path always leads to the boss Balbala, and the other leads to the exit. To find Balbala, follow the trail of Maraketh parchment used to bind Djinns.
- Titan Valley: The level goal is immediately visible upon entry via a giant set of Titan heads.
- Behind each head is a linear canyon.
- Upon reaching the end of a canyon and activating the seal, a portal spawns to return you to the start immediately to witness the result of the activation.
Act 3: NPC Guidance and Map Layout Adjustments
Act 3 streamlining focuses on information delivery and relocating specific sub-zones for better flow:
- Explorer Camps: NPCs in jungle camps now provide directions. Speaking to them points you toward the next area and reveals the destination on the mini-map.
- Waterways: The entrance has been moved to the Jungle Ruins (previously located in the Infested Barrens).
- Venom Crypts: An alternate escape route has been added to allow for a shortcut back through the jungle.
- Azak Bog: This area has been moved into the Waterways so it no longer needs to be hunted for in the sparse jungle.
