Character creation in Path of Exile 2 is inherently complex. While many players enjoy theory-crafting their own characters, a significant portion of the community relies on external guides and tools. To streamline this experience, a new Build Guide system has been integrated directly into the game client, allowing players to follow community expertise more efficiently.

Technical Implementation: The .build File

Build creators can now export their character configurations using a dedicated file format. To use these guides:

  1. Download the desired .build file from a community creator.
  2. Navigate to the Path of Exile 2 folder within the Documents directory.
  3. Place the file into the build subdirectory.

Once placed, the guide automatically appears within the game client.

Visualizing the Build

Selecting a guide inside the client provides a comprehensive overview of everything required to play the build, including:

  • The Full Passive Tree: Highlights the pathing and nodes necessary for the build.
  • Ascendancy Choices: Displays the specific sub-class specializations.
  • Skill and Support Gems: Shows exactly which gems need to be equipped and the recommended support gems for each setup.

Management and Customization

The interface includes a dropdown box in various menus (Passive Tree, Skills, etc.) that allows players to switch between different imported guides. This feature enables players to compare recommendations from different creators or maintain multiple guides for different stages of gameplay.

Gear Recommendations and Annotations

The system provides tools for creators to offer detailed guidance on equipment:

  • Unique Items: Creators can specify exact unique items for every gear slot.
  • Item Notes: For rare items, creators can leave notes describing the specific stats, bases, or modifiers required.
  • General Notes: Creators can add annotations to almost any part of the guide to explain mechanical trade-offs, alternative options, or how various systems within the build synergize.

Release Information

The Build Guide system and other new features will be available in the Return of the Ancients update, launching on May 29th.
