New PoE2 Breach mechanic EXPLAINED
Summary
- Breach is undergoing a major rework in Patch 0.5, Return of the Ancients, fusing Path of Exile 1 mechanics with a significantly expanded crafting system.
- Success depends on high Area of Effect (AoE) coverage, clear speed, and strong defenses to survive being surrounded.
- The Genesis Tree is the core crafting hub, powered by Hiveblood and directed by Womb Gifts.
- Breach Rings can now reach up to 50% quality, making them potentially more powerful than standard jewelry.
- Progression involves clearing Hives and Skyhives to reach bosses like Vrun and the pinnacle boss, Zesh.
Starting the Breach Questline
The Breach questline begins early in the Atlas progression. To find it, head south from the starting maps; there is no RNG involved in locating the initial area.
Because Breach involves an expanding border that spawns monsters all around you, it heavily rewards builds with high AoE coverage. High clear speed is necessary to keep the Breach open, while strong defenses are required to survive being surrounded by invisible monsters that can hit you from the edge of the border.
Core Mechanics and Rewards
Breach encounters require filling a stability bar by killing monsters. If you kill enough monsters to fill the bar, the Breach stabilizes.
- Stabilization Spawns: Once stabilized, the encounter will spawn either three rare monsters or the boss, Vrun.
- Vrun: A returning boss from Path of Exile 1. Be cautious of his shotgun-style attacks, which can be lethal, especially for hardcore players.
- Catalysts: These drop from Breach content and are used to improve quality on jewelry, strengthening specific modifier types.
- Breach Rings: These rings lack an implicit modifier but can reach 50% quality (compared to the standard 20%). This allows for significantly higher rolls on stats like life.
The Genesis Tree and Hiveblood Crafting
After your first Breach, the NPC Elith will appear and direct you to a Breach Fortress. Completing Breaches grants Hiveblood, which is the resource used to power the Genesis Tree.
Womb Gifts
These are items that drop from Breach content and are placed into the Genesis Tree to guarantee specific item types. The tree in Path of Exile 2 is much larger and more specific than its predecessor. For example, when crafting an amulet, you can choose:
- Specific base types (e.g., a Stellar Amulet).
- Increased likelihood for specific resistance types (Fire, Cold, or Lightning).
- Modifier tier ratings to increase the chance of rolling high-tier mods (e.g., “Flaring”).
Crafting Logic and Respecs
The Genesis Tree allows for free respecs, letting you experiment with different configurations at no cost. Effective crafting involves using “Blockers” to reduce the chance of undesirable attributes.
- Example: If crafting an Energy Shield chest piece, you would select nodes that reduce the chance of Strength and Dexterity modifiers while increasing the chance of Intelligence modifiers.
- Fractured Stats: Some nodes may provide a chance for items to drop with fractured mods. Fractured mods are locked and cannot be removed by currency like Chaos Orbs or Annulment Orbs.
Progression: Strongholds and Hives
To access a Breach Stronghold, you need a Breachstone. In Path of Exile 2, these are obtained by using a specific Womb Gift in the Genesis Tree rather than collecting individual splinters.
- Breach Hives: Inside Strongholds, you will encounter Hives. These function as a soft tower-defense mechanic where you protect a central point. Elith assists with skills that can freeze enemies or provide a fire aura.
- Skyhives: These are larger versions of the Hive encounter found in the center of the Fortress.
- Boss Fights: After completing the Skyhive, you fight a boss. The first encounter is typically a “tutorial” version, similar to the quest versions of Eater of Worlds or Searing Exarch in Path of Exile 1. Harder versions are available for farming later.
- Zesh: The pinnacle boss of the Breach mechanic.
Endgame Mapping and Optimization
When using the Atlas, you can utilize Tablets to customize your maps. Maps are limited to a maximum of three league mechanics. Using three Breach tablets will ensure that only Breaches spawn in that map, preventing other random mechanics like Abyss from appearing.
Layout Importance: Map layout is critical for Breach efficiency. Open layouts are superior because the Breach needs space to expand. Tight, walled areas (like Crypt maps) restrict the expansion, causing you to miss out on monster spawns and potential loot.
