My Final Build Update on Blade Vortex Charlatan Elementalist - Path of Exile

Summary

  • A min-maxed Blade Vortex (BV) build focusing on maximum Area of Effect (AoE) and screen-wide explosions.
  • Utilizes the Golden Charlatan sword to steal shrine buffs, further enhanced by The Gull and Headhunter.
  • Exploits the Minion Pact support gem snapshotting mechanic to gain massive amounts of flat physical damage from high-life spectres.
  • Achieves extreme clear speed with a 5.5-meter explosion radius that chains through packs.
  • Scales Herald buff effects via Elementalist ascendancy and specific cluster jewels for global damage and clear efficiency.
  • Caps spell suppression and achieves elemental ailment immunity through Stormshroud and shock avoidance.

The Core Concept: Minion Pact Snapshotting

The damage floor of this build is carried by the Minion Pact support gem. This mechanic is currently extremely powerful and is expected to be nerfed in future patches.

  1. The Spectre: Use a high-health spectre, specifically the one from the Carcass map (Act 9 or Atlas version). Having only one spectre is preferred to trigger the Companionship life bonus.
  2. The Sacrifice: When casting Blade Vortex, the gem sacrifices 3.2% of the minion’s life and converts it into flat physical damage. With a spectre possessing 2–3 million HP, this adds roughly 70,000+ flat physical damage.
  3. Snapshotting: Blade Vortex snapshots this damage. As long as the BV stacks do not drop to zero, the flat physical damage persists for the entire map.
  4. Hideout Safety: Sacrificing the spectre in a hideout is permanent. Use an MTX like the Goblin Witch Doctor or Meretrix to disable spell casting in the hideout and prevent accidental sacrifice. The spectre resummons automatically when entering a new zone if it dies.

Key Gear Pieces

  • Golden Charlatan: The central weapon of the build. It allows the character to steal shrine buffs from killed enemies. When combined with The Gull (92% increased shrine effect and duration), the character becomes nearly immortal and incredibly fast once ramped.
  • Original Sin: An expensive but powerful ring that converts all damage to chaos and sets enemy chaos resistance to zero. This allows explosions (Unspeakable Gifts, Oriath’s End) to scale massively with chaos damage modifiers.
  • Herald of the Hive (Loss Unity): Extremely strong on Elementalist due to high Herald buff effect scaling. It provides a massive global damage multiplier.
  • Mirror-Tier Necrotic Armor: Features elevated “Explode” and “Rarity” modifiers. The Necrotic base provides Evasion and Energy Shield; when combined with the Impenetrable Shrine, evasion reaches ~20,000 (80% evade chance).
  • Headhunter: Provides additional ramp. A double-corrupted version with % AoE and “Culling Strike” is ideal for maximizing explosion damage.
  • Boots: Triple elevated (Onslaught, Tailwind, Elusive) with spell suppression to hit the suppression cap.

Gem Setup and Mana Management

The build uses a high number of Heralds and Auras, managed through reservation efficiency and Lifetap.

  • Main Link: Blade Vortex, Minion Pact, More Duration, Unleash, Increased AoE, and Eclipse Support. (Note: Only Minion Pact is a pure damage support; others are quality-of-life).
  • Auras: Herald of Ash, Ice, Thunder, Agony, Purity, and Haste.
  • Support: Awakened Enlighten 5 and Eclipse 4 in the sword are used to manage mana reservation.
  • Utility: Automation linked with Steelskin and Frostblink. Adding a Level 1 Lifetap to these links (and BV) ensures the build is viable for all map modifiers, as no skills cost mana.

Passive Tree and Cluster Jewels

The tree focuses on stacking AoE, chaos damage for explosions, and Herald buff effect.

  • Large Clusters: Three-passive clusters featuring Unspeakable Gifts (explosions) and Titanic Swings (AoE).
  • Medium Clusters: Empowered Envoy (Herald effect) and Assert Dominance (AoE on kill).
  • Jewel Sockets:
    • Forbidden Flame/Flesh: Used for massive AoE scaling.
    • Light of Meaning: Placed in the bottom socket to grant 6% increased chaos damage per passive, significantly boosting explosion damage.
    • Unnatural Instinct: Provides area effect, physical damage, and duration.
    • Stormshroud: Grants elemental ailment immunity by scaling shock avoidance to 100% (80% from Timeless Jewel, 20% from a Megalomaniac or small cluster).

Scaling AoE and Breakpoints

AoE scaling in Path of Exile functions on specific breakpoints.

  • Always check Path of Building (PoB) for the next 0.1-meter radius increment. Adding 10% increased AoE is useless if it does not reach the next threshold.
  • Prioritize on-kill monster explosion AoE over BV radius, as the explosions are the primary clear mechanic.
  • The build targets a 5.5-meter explosion radius, which allows for off-screen clearing during high-density mechanics like Breach.

Budget Considerations

A budget version (approximately 500–700 divines) can function without Original Sin or mirror-tier gear.

  • Amulet: Use Marylene’s Fallacy for massive crit multplier. The build easily hits the crit cap via Diamond Shrines, making the amulet’s “less critical strike chance” penalty irrelevant.
  • Suppression: If lacking mirror boots/chest, use a small cluster jewel with Elegant Form to cap spell suppression and provide resistances.
  • Notes: Even at lower investment, the build remains fast (200%+ movement speed) and capable of T17 maps, though the damage floor remains tied to the price of the Golden Charlatan sword.
