Is Energy Shield Dead? My Post 0.5 Nerf Take - POE2
Summary
- Energy Shield Status: While Energy Shield (ES) received nerfs to recovery rate and faster start to recharge in the 0.5 update, it remains a highly viable defensive layer capable of reaching 10,000+ effective health.
- Lich Ascendancy: The Lich is uniquely positioned to handle these nerfs due to inherent flat damage reduction mechanics (Solus Form, Eternal Life, Heavy Buffer).
- Convalescence Strategy: The skill Convalescence is identified as a critical tool for maintaining ES, particularly when combined with cooldown reduction and multi-use setups to bypass recharge delays.
Addressing Energy Shield Nerfs
The 0.5 update introduces significant adjustments to Energy Shield, primarily targeting recovery rate and the speed at which recharge starts. While certain nodes like Patient Barrier were nerfed and others like Calibration were removed, the overall capacity to build high levels of Energy Shield remains intact. Concerns regarding the “death” of the archetype are considered hyperbolic; ES remains a top-tier defensive layer.
The Lich Advantage
The Lich ascendancy is arguably the least affected by these changes. Key ascendancy features—specifically Solus Form, Eternal Life, and Heavy Buffer—provide over 25% flat damage reduction. This inherent survivability mitigates the impact of longer recharge delays, allowing the character to survive while waiting for ES to replenish.
Essential Sustain: The Convalescence Skill
Convalescence remains an indispensable skill for Energy Shield builds in the 0.5 update. It provides an instant ES recharge buff that persists even if the character continues to take damage during the buff’s duration.
To optimize this for active combat, the following setup is recommended:
- Second Wind (Support Gem): Provides an additional charge/use of the skill, ensuring that if you are forced to use the skill and subsequently take more damage, a backup charge is available.
- Cooldown Recovery: Utilizing gems or items like Ad Seris Impatience significantly reduces the downtime of the skill.
- By stacking cooldown recovery, it is possible to achieve a cooldown of approximately 22 seconds with two charges, effectively allowing for a recharge activation roughly every 11 seconds.
Practical Application
Even without passive nodes dedicated to faster energy shield recharge, a 5-second recharge delay is manageable. By combining the natural 5-second delay with Convalescence as an active safety net, the build maintains high survivability. The combination of damage reduction from the Lich ascendancy and the active recovery provided by Convalescence makes the Energy Shield archetype robust despite the recent balance changes.
