The Gold Barrier for Hideout Players

Generating currency through trading and crafting often hits a bottleneck: gold. Since gold is required for transactions on the Currency Exchange and for various crafting processes, players who spend their time in the hideout rather than mapping may run out. Traditionally, one might buy bulk maps from other players to vendor for gold, but this is slow, relies on other players responding to trades, and is not self-sustaining.

There is a way to infinitely generate gold without leaving the hideout or transacting with players directly. This method will likely be even more effective in the upcoming league due to the Expedition system revamps.

Required Materials and Setup

To begin this process, you need to source specific items from the Currency Exchange and have the correct NPC in your hideout.

  1. Gwennen: Invite her to your hideout. You only need to complete one Expedition encounter during the league to be able to assign Expedition characters to your hideout permanently.
  2. Broken Circle Artifacts: Purchase these from the Expedition section of the Currency Exchange. They are used to buy equipment from Gwennen. At the time of recording, these are roughly 190 per 1 Divine Orb, but they are usually much cheaper at league start.
  3. Exotic Coinage: Purchase these from the Currency Exchange to refresh Gwennen’s inventory.
  4. Omen of Bartering: Found in the Ritual section of the Currency Exchange. These are not strictly necessary but are highly recommended because they significantly increase the gold return when selling items to a vendor.

Execution: The Gwennen Strategy

Once you have the materials, follow these steps to generate gold:

  1. Activate your Omens of Bartering in your inventory.
  2. Open Gwennen’s “Deal” window.
  3. Type rare in the search bar at the bottom to highlight all rare items.
  4. Focus on buying weapons, as they inherently sell for the most gold. The more modifiers a rare weapon has, the higher the gold potential.
  5. Hold the Control key and click to quickly purchase the highlighted rare items using your Broken Circle Artifacts.
  6. Once your inventory is full, or you have exhausted the current rares, use an Exotic Coinage to refresh her inventory and repeat the process.

The Buyback Exploit for Maximum Gold

The Omen of Bartering provides a multiplier to the gold received when vendoring. You can exploit the vendor’s buyback screen to ensure every item provides a high return.

  1. Sell your purchased rares to Gwennen.
  2. Look at the gold values offered in the sell window. You can see returns ranging from 3,000 to over 50,000 gold for a single item.
  3. If an item sells for a very low amount (e.g., 800 gold), its inherent sell price might actually be higher.
  4. Check the Buyback tab. If you see an item listed for a low buyback price (e.g., 875 gold), buy it back.
  5. Resell that same item to her. The Omen of Bartering effect may trigger a much higher value (e.g., 14,000+ gold) on the subsequent attempt.
  6. Repeat this “sell and buyback” loop for any items that didn’t provide a high gold yield initially.

Using this method, you can turn a small handful of artifacts and coins into hundreds of thousands of gold in minutes. In one demonstration, using only 24 Broken Circle Artifacts and a few coins resulted in nearly 400,000 gold.

Strategic Benefits

  • Early League Utility: In the first 48 hours of a league, gold costs for items like Exalted Orbs are low (around 6,000 gold). A few minutes of this method can fund your trading for a long period.
  • Emergency Gold: If you see a high-value item listed for a low price on the market but lack the gold to complete the trade, this method allows you to generate the necessary gold in seconds without entering a map.
  • Item Sourcing: While doing this, you can look for high-level item bases or rares with Tier 1 modifiers that are worth keeping or crafting, effectively “double-dipping” on the utility of Expedition artifacts.
