Hierophant Scorching Ray of Immolation Takes Gauntlet Uber Shaper
Summary
- Skill Synergy: Uses Scorching Ray of Immolation with totems to bypass the usual single-instance dot limit, allowing multiple debuffs to stack for high single-target damage.
- Defensive Scaling: Focuses on high Energy Shield (ES) paired with recover-on-block shields and maximum spell block.
- Mitigation Layers: Utilizes minimum endurance charges, physical-to-elemental/chaos damage conversion, and defensive skills like Sigil of Power and Frost Shield.
- Stun Immunity: Achieves 100% stun avoidance through passive masteries and Abyssal jewels to prevent being locked down during boss mechanics.
- Gauntlet Strategy: Specifically tailored for Hardcore Solo Self-Found (HCSSF) bossing, prioritizing spell block and reliability over movement speed and mapping comfort.
The Core Concept: Scorching Ray of Immolation Totems
Scorching Ray of Immolation is an exceptionally strong damage-over-time (DoT) skill because it allows for multiple instances of the debuff to stack. Unlike skills like Vortex, where only one instance deals damage at a time, each totem can apply its own individual debuff. By spamming totems, I can continuously stack these debuffs.
This mechanic opens up duration as a damage scaling vector. Increasing duration allows earlier debuffs to remain active while new ones are applied, creating a significant ramp in total damage. This setup allows for solid DPS even when the character is heavily invested in defenses.
Defensive Foundation: Block and Energy Shield
I chose the classic combination of block and ES. While Grinding Gear Games nerfed Intelligence scaling recently, bringing Life and ES builds closer in power, ES remains a premier choice for high-end recovery when paired with a “recover on block” shield.
To cap block, I utilized large cluster jewels, which are currently among the strongest sources of block in the game:
- Shield Clusters: Prodigious and Riot Queller provide massive attack block.
- Spell Clusters: Mage Hunter and Conjured Wall provide significant spell block.
I prioritized Mage Hunter on the travel nodes of all spell clusters. While Conjured Wall provides block when casting spells, I capped my spell block without relying on it because placing totems does not count as casting a spell. This ensures I stay capped even if I forget to Flame Dash or cast a curse for a few seconds.
Specialized Defenses for Uber Bosses
For Uber bossing, I prioritized spell block over attack block. In fights like Uber Shaper, Uber Maven, and Uber Sirus, the most dangerous hits are spells (e.g., Shaper’s purple balls). Conversely, many dangerous attacks (like the Shaper slam) have “cannot be blocked” modifiers, making attack block less valuable in those specific encounters.
Stun avoidance is also critical. If a character is stunned by a single projectile in a multi-hit sequence, it usually leads to a quick death. I achieved 100% stun avoidance using:
- One passive mastery.
- A glove suffix.
- Two Abyssal jewels on the passive tree.
Additional Mitigation and Guard Skills
The build utilizes several layers of damage reduction:
- Endurance Charges: Five minimum endurance charges (four from the Hierophant ascendancy and one from a ring suffix) provide permanent physical damage reduction.
- Physical Taken As: Using Chaos Inoculation (CI), I focus on converting physical damage taken to chaos damage, which I am immune to.
- Sigil of Power & Frost Shield: These provide “less damage taken” modifiers and extra hit-point buffers when standing within their radius.
- Immortal Call: This is the primary emergency button. I time it specifically for boss slams.
Note: There appears to be a current bug where the “15% less physical damage taken per endurance charge removed” line on Immortal Call functions with minimum endurance charges. This provides roughly 90% physical damage reduction when active, making even Uber Shaper slams survivable.
Gear Optimization and Missed Opportunities
Due to the time constraints of the Gauntlet, some ideal gear pieces were unavailable:
- Anathema Ring: Finding this would have allowed for up to five curses (Enfeeble, Punishment, Temp Chains, Flammability, and Elemental Weakness), providing both a massive defensive boost and more damage than the Arcane Surge ascendancy node.
- Impermeable Belt: This was used as a temporary high-ES solution. While it boosts survivability, the lack of a Quicksilver or Quartz flask makes mapping significantly slower and more dangerous.
- Shield Crafting: If I had acquired a Shaper Exalted Orb, the ideal shield would be crafted as follows:
- Recombine an Energy Shield base with a high block chance roll.
- Ensure two desired suffixes and block the third suffix.
- Use a Shaper Exalted Orb to guaranteed hit the “+1 to maximum number of Summoned Totems” prefix.
The Gauntlet Experience and Build Progression
The character started as a Guardian using Absolution for a smooth leveling experience before transitioning into this Hierophant setup for endgame bossing. Despite the 7-day time limit, the build successfully took down two Ubers, including Uber Shaper. This setup is highly recommended for players looking for a reliable boss-killer that scales well with minimal gear but has a high ceiling with investment.
