Diablo 4 UPDATED Paladin and Warlock Leveling Builds
Summary
- Thorns Paladin remains an elite leveling choice, capable of melting campaign bosses in seconds, though it requires a temporary build until level 36.
- The Metamorphosis Warlock concept based on rank-stacking is no longer viable due to balance changes, leading to the development of the Dread Claw Warlock.
- Dread Claw Warlock focuses on massive AoE with Dread Claw and high single-target damage using Profane Sentinel and Terror Swarm.
- A key mechanical discovery for Warlocks involves using Command Fallen as a “Recast” skill to generate Wrath while simultaneously applying Hex.
- Both builds are highly efficient, with the Warlock capable of entering Torment 4 while wearing basic yellow gear.
Paladin Leveling Update
The Thorns Paladin remains incredibly powerful for clearing the campaign. However, there is a significant caveat: the primary attack—Shield Throw (which pulses and triggers Thorns)—is locked until level 36.
To level from 1 to 36, use any viable early-game setup such as Hammerdin or Holy Bolt. Once you reach level 36, respec into the Thorns build. This setup is highly effective for boss encounters, capable of bypassing most mechanics by killing bosses like Mephisto almost instantly. The full leveling guide (1-70) has been updated on Mobalytics to reflect these changes.
Dread Claw Warlock Overview
The original Metamorphosis build, which relied on +15 ranks to skills, was removed by developers. In its place, the Dread Claw Warlock has emerged as a top-tier alternative. This build is strong enough to push into Torment 4 with minimal gear (basic yellow items, no uniques, and minimal tempering).
Core Mechanics and Wrath Generation
The build relies on a specific interaction between Command Fallen and the Mastermind Shard (Warlock power).
- Command Fallen is the preferred generator because it is highly efficient at restoring Wrath when the three summoned Fallen melee enemies.
- By selecting the upgrade that allows you to direct Fallen while they are active, the skill gains the Recast tag.
- The Blasphemous upgrade for the Mastermind Shard causes all “Recast” skills to apply Hex on hit.
- Hex increases the Abyssal damage taken by enemies (stacking up to three times). This interaction allows you to use the best resource generator to also apply your primary damage debuff.
Skill Selection and Synergies
- Dread Claw: The primary AoE tool. It clears screens easily, functioning like a “bowling alley of claws.”
- Profane Sentinel: Taken specifically for single-target damage. Synergies include increased damage when hitting a single target and a stacking damage bonus (25% per second) when locked onto one enemy.
- Terror Swarm (Ultimate): Acts as a high-damage “Piranado” that can be moved around to group and melt enemies.
- Command Laylish: Obtained through the Mastermind Shard. She applies Vulnerable and helps maintain Shadow Form.
- Nether Step: Used for mobility and to instantly gain stacks of Shadow Form, which significantly increases damage output.
Gameplay Loop and Progression
For general clearing, simply use Dread Claw to wipe out mobs. In tougher fights or against bosses:
- Summon Fallen Lunatics to begin Hexing and generating Wrath.
- Dash into the fight to gain Shadow Form stacks.
- Cast Command Laylish, Terror Swarm, and Profane Sentinel on the target.
- Spam Dread Claw to finish the encounter.
Skill Point Allocation
Prioritize unlocking every skill and its corresponding upgrades as soon as they become available. Use extra points to max out skills in the following order:
- Dread Claw (to 15)
- Terror Swarm
- Profane Sentinel
- Command Fallen
- Nether Step
Mercenaries
- Subo: Used for the “map hack” utility.
- Aldkin: Provides a 20% damage reduction field, which is useful when standing still to cast Terror Swarm and Sentinel.
